THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 13

Welcome back. I’ve been a busy little Indie monkey recently, so after a few posts of a slightly more Electro bend, I’ve now got a Recommender with a more Indie trend for this edition, (Happy now Stu? – you know who you are! ha ha). This blog is supposed to list all things Indie and Electro so I need to make sure I don’t wander too much in one direction or the other. There’s a lot of ‘blog house’ out there, so sometimes it’s easier to lean towards Electro dance music, but my Recommender Elves are always shopping for Indie stuff too, so I’m pleased to get a little more balance back with this post. Enjoy

THE SHINING LIES
Dave from the band approached me on Myspace and they delightfully turned out to be a band rammed full of joyful, tuneful, classic Indie. Think the Kaiser Chiefs reflecting over The Pixies and you get an idea. Bands like these often melt into one and disastrously tend to seem stuck in the mid-90’s Brit-pop era, without seeing the need to freshen up, but these guys definitely pack enough punch to shine above. Entertaining yet strange lyrics, simple guitar melodies and chanting chorus’ should prove to suit all festival afternoon slots like a dream come true.  Anyways, check them out as it leaves a sweet taste in your ears and you’ll see what a crew of charmers they are. I look forward to their live sets.

COLOSSUS
What a sound these guys create! I’m not sure if these guys will be a ‘marmite band’ or not. Sometimes I think their totally ace and when I return to listen another time I’m not so sure. I thought I’d list them here to see what you think, so give them a pop and let me know. Overall though I must admit that I’m gearing more and more towards liking them, so perhaps they’re going to grow on me – like all good bands tend to. Their punky highlights are superb and it’s those that grabbed my attention. Think of a wild, loose animal of a garage band, with fuzzy chords that swing from sweet, delicate old school Bowie-like guitar breaks that then jump into shouty vocals. They’re kinda impossible to describe or to do any justice in words, so I list their tune, ‘Green Card’, which they kindly sent to me on email, for you to cast your ears towards…

THE FOXES
This is the sort of good Indie band that used to be found in their dozens in recent years. With their simple, upbeat, feel-good guitaring and beat combo, they merrily swing along. Sadly the singer reminds me of the guy that sings for Mcfly, which is harsh I know, but I just cannot help it. Additionally the lyrics happen to let them down a little and I think I list their best tune to date below. However, the reason they stand out to me, (and this is what ultimately gets them The Recommender treatment), is that there are a handful of highlights jumbled up in the band. Firstly, their lead guitarist, Jonno, is the sort of sharp riffer that really adds to their songs. I like his ‘one long solo’ approach to each song, always flicking little sounds out throughout (like Noel Gallagher did so triumphantly in the song Columbia – Oasis’ best tune in my opinion). The other highlight is when they build up chanting, sing-along hooks that pound out moments any live crowd is going to love. So in conclusion, they’ve a long way to go, particularly listening to the other tracks, but the promise is definitely there. They simply need to focus more on their good points and originality. Oh and they really need to work on those lyrics – way too many “woah woah’s”. Their single, listed below, which they sent to me to review, is out today (20th October), so look out for a right blitz from The Foxes real soon. Enjoy…

New readers and fans are crawling out from all corners of the world for The Recommender these days, in their thousands, so time to say a large THANKS to you all me thinks. Your comments, messages, links and love are part of what makes this whole thing swing, so keep spreading the word and world domination will definitely be kept on track…
