THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 46

We are pleased to inform you that we’ve relocated our monthly parties to a new home in Brighton; the larger capacity and better established venue, Audio, with its fantastic view of Brighton’s pier and beach.  We launch here on Saturday 31st July and we’ve pulled out all the stops to book a selection of truly awesome bands and DJs to kick things off in style.

In a change to the original format we’ve now split the evening in two.  Firstly, we have our Recommender Live section, which showcases two or three cutting edge bands from around the world.  From 11pm we step in to the Recommender Late, which is more of club night, bringing an awesome headline DJ to town, alongside our resident Recommender DJs – consisting of Matt Allfrey, from Battery Powered DJs and Jonny Cassell, from the established Blah Blah Blah DJ crew.

Of course our familiar and totally brilliant photobooth will return, (see previous results of that here), and we will be giving away a free mixtape CD to the first 50 people through the door. The mixtape from our last show can be heard and downloaded below. It’s a little bit good…

YOUNG EMPIRES – First featured on The Recommender here, we are pleased to be bringing this Canadian three piece to Brighton for the first time ever.  They arrive with a tidal wave of hype and hungry A&R men, alongside their original, percussive, indie pop magic.  The new Friendly Fires anyone?

SUNDAY GIRL – SELF CONTROL (YOUNG EMPIRES REMIX)

DAVID E. SUGAR – This will be a live set with a band behind this pioneering DJ.  Famous for doing extraordinary things with a Speak & Spell, you may well have come across this underground sensation on Kitsune compilations.  Most recently he’s signed to Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label, which will surely push this artist well and truly overground.

THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND – There’s honestly no superlatives or twisted adjectives that could describe just how good this eight piece New York band are.  They have absolutely every ingredient to make our party go off.  Impossibly entertaining disco, funk, pop and groove are all thumped out by the sexiest band alive today.  Prepare to be hypnotized!

RECOMMENDER DJs – We bring to Audio our regular partner in beats, the Brighton hipster Matt Allfrey, from Battery Powered DJs, but standing alongside will now be the head of the Blah Blah Blah DJ crew, Jonny Cassell.  If you’ve been to any killer parties in the city of Brighton in recent years the chances are one of these two were involved.

RORY PHILLIPS – Topping our club night is this extraordinary DJ.  He’s the protegé to none other than the DJ overlord, Erol Alkan, having had a residency at London’s Trash night and its modern version, Durr.   With a truckload of seemingly perfect remixes under his belt, expect a set of the unexpected – of course played using his signature phone set instead of a pair of headphones.  As Brighton’s going out bible, The Source Magazine, put it: “Rory Phillips should be fanfared into town like a god“.  Well, we are that very fanfare.

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 45

Thanks to all those that came to our last party (#4), as we thought it was the best yet.  Wild Palms played one of the best shows we’ve ever put on.  The culture of new continues as we look to the next showcase of cutting edge music, with party #5.

Of course everybody’s favourite lens twiddler, Eleni Mettyear, will return to snap all you drunk punters.  The results from the last photobooth are found here.  Bring your best.  Whatever that might be.

Our new mixtape, compiling a selection of the world’s newest tracks, will exclusively be handed out, weeks before it’s available to anyone else, along with the Recommender badges and other goodies.  We list the mixtape from April’s show below.  If you didn’t make our last party, then try clicking play to see what you missed…

THE RECOMMENDER MIXTAPE # 5

MUCHUU – This brother/sister duo surpass their young ages with a box full of magical, gorgeous pop songs.  Japan already love them, so cute and impossibly irresistable are both their songs and their looks.  Time for the UK to fall in love with them too. Check out this remix of their tune Somebody Tell Me.

THE GOOD NATURED – In a year where strong female vocalists have stopped the traffic like an Icelandic volcano, we bring you the very next queen to the throne.  Star quality, showmanship, and most importantly a special ability to pen an extraordinary pop tune, will be evidenced in one of our most exciting headliners ever.  Here’s a very recent Baby Monster remix of her track Your Body Is A Machine.

BATTERY POWERED DJs – Our resident DJs will round off the evening, playing tracks exclusively from the blog, so expect cutting edge, razor sharp selections. If you want to know what tunes you should be listening to this year then check out this set from Brighton’s scenester DJs.

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 37

We are still buzzing after our last impressive show headlined by Velo. Those guys have all the ingredients to be huge.  :Kinema:‘s support was the perfect match too and it’s good to see they’ve got onto The Guardian’s ‘New Band Of The Day‘ listing since.  We hope Velo will return to play our planned showcase at The Great Escape Festival in May.  More details to follow on that one in due course…

Looking ahead to our next show, we will obviously bring back the amazing Eleni Mettyear and her photobooth, which is creating it’s own reputation amongst the crowds, so make sure you look gorgeous.  The legendary Recommender Mixtape, (4th edition), will be ready and handed out in gift packs, alongside our badges (seeing them on lapels all around town now!) and stickers, amongst other items.  See the mixtape mp3 listed below that was handed out at our last party.  Lastly we will be providing some amazing music to help make our first Saturday night go with bang, no, make that a BOOM!

THE HIGH WIRE – First up on tonight’s showcase will be this London trio who make utterly astonishing, angelic pop music.  Having released their debut album, The Sleep Tape, earlier this very month, we know that we can expect a set packed with extraordinary songs.  Come see them live and we promise you will get as convinced as we are that this is a very special band.

FOREIGN OFFICE – Feel the evening change gear as this quad of fantastic songsmiths arrive to play the last gig prior to the launch of their single, Leaving The House (29th March). It’s as strong as any indie track we’ve heard in recent times and the buzz is building up. They’ve recently supported other Recommender favourites, such as Wave Machines, O.Children and our headliners for April, Wild Palms. Watch it hit fever pitch as these upbeat melody makers storm our party.

CASIOKIDS (DJ SET) – If you know about the Casiokids then you know how expert they are at whipping the crowd into a frenzy, so we expect no less from their DJ sets. However, if you don’t know the Casiokids (!?) then prepare yourself to witness the dancefloor taking off. They return from their recent supporting tour of Hot Chip and a successful SXSW Festival in the USA. There really couldn’t be a better way to enjoy a Saturday night.

It’s only £4 advance and £6 on the door for access to all of the above amazing entertainment, as we seriously don’t want anyone missing out on the action. This is a night gathering some serious buzz around Brighton, so come see what the fuss is all about…
