THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 84 – BUTTERFLY BONES

BUTTERFLY BONES

This is an act we found whilst doing our usual rounds of the ever-reliable blogs Big Stereo, Discodust and Gotta Dance Dirty.  Hailing from California, Butterfly Bones make suitably sunshine-infused, synth led pop music.  They’ve already been tagged as chill wave, but they come with the implied warmth of a dwindling bonfire’s embers on the beach one August morning.  It’s the kind of feel good soundtrack that Cut Copy made us fall in love with when they were focusing on their laid-back, drawn-out grooves.  Alongside the synthetic, fuzzy-round-the-edges bass and dreamy, sliding melodies, there’s also the requisite light guitar play to tickle the ear and remind the listener that there are indeed human hands behind this project.  Drizzled on top of the already delicious, but rapidly melting ice cream sundae of synths and guitars, are Reese Donohue’s vocals.  They lazily cascade down over ripples of funk and some smooth, icy, glissandos, scooping this sticky treat into your ears, whilst a sprinkling of chocolate chip handclaps dance over the top.  Butterfly Bones make songs to sweat to, although this is not music that you throw yourself around to, it’s what you put on when you’re already sweating.  Consider it for those moments when you’re sunning yourself by the pool, glistening healthily, and checking out that bikini clad girl, as she conspicuously checks herself out in your mirrored sunglasses.  We attach below one of our favourite tracks from the Pretty Feelings EP, Ur Hott, released last October, as well as a more recent example of their work, <3, released as a recent single.  If we don’t get these guys to come and play at one of our Recommender parties this year then the sun may as well not come out at all.    (MA)

HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 25

THE REMIXES – PART 4 – THE GOLDEN FILTER

As we look fondly back to the previous three editions of The Recommender’s Remix specials, which included Bloc Party, Soulwax and Discotech,we realise that it takes a box rammed full of quality chop-ups to attend this party. This time is no different and so we welcome you to The Golden Filter edition.

This Disco-Electro pair are a very mysterious group that have arrived on the blog’s scene with as much of a thump as Mohammed Ali with a run up. Although they’ve toured parts of the world, including supporting The Presets on their American tour, showcasing their magic throughout the last year or so, Golden Filter keep their identity well and truly out of the spotlight.

We caught up with them after a performance in our local city of Brighton a few months back and the passion for their music was what they wanted to stand proud. And boy did it tower. They have a distinctive and addictive beat and a love of all things Synth. Having produced a couple of instant self-penned disco classics, they started to put their hands to other peoples tunes.

The remix work that they produced only proved to further show up their true musical ability. They not only pick a wide range of tunes to put in the blender, but also bring a freshness to them, whilst still allowing the listener to pick out that it’s Golden Filter from a mile off. Cue the thumping, the pounding 4-beat and a twinkle of their gorgeously infectious, styled keys.

They recently informed us that following this batch of remixes they are now finally taking time away from them to re-focus on their own material, so here is their full remix selection in all its glory. It looks like this may be it for a while now so enjoy…

EMPIRE OF THE SUN –  WE ARE THE PEOPLE (The Golden Filter Remix)        (ysi)

LITTLE BOOTS
–  NEW IN TOWN (The Golden Filter Dub Mix)       (ysi)

CUT COPY
–  FAR AWAY (The Golden Filter Remix)         (ysi)

POLLY SCATTERGOOD
–  PLEASE DON’T TOUCH (The Golden Filter Vocal Remix)        (ysi)

PETER BJORN & JOHN
–  LAY IT DOWN (The Golden Filter Remix)        (ysi)

The 5th edition of ‘The Remixes’ has already been decided, so it will be posted up in due course. We’ve heard they are currently writing yet another one, so we think it best that we await that addition before we post about them. In true Golden Filter style we will keep it secret for now. Consider it yet another reason for you to keep one eye (or should that be ear?) on The Recommender…

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 4

It’s been a few weeks, so sorry for the delay, but it’s…well…tough shit, and quite frankly I got a whole load of sweet and magical posts to swing by your ears so you are soon going to luuurve me for forever, so sit back, read away and click, upload and prepare to watch me fly…

With this Gig List I’m gonna focus solely on the upcoming LOOP FESTIVAL based in Brighton’s busy centre on 16th August. What a totally super-sweet line up it’s forged for this year. After last years success this is now an annual event and the set up is going from strength to strength. In a city known for its new music scenester festivals and particularly for breaking acts, Loop stands tall.

Amongst others, this year holds up; New Young Pony Club, The Bays, Caged Baby, , Primary One, Transformers and the fantastically named Holy Fuck. Nice!

However, I’m blowing my top over the following two awesome bands…CUT COPY and THE SHOES. Both are right up there with the best in both cracking tunes and blinding live sets.  Brightons going to swing until it goes boom!

CUT COPY – As tasty as Indie-Dance gets quite frankly. If you wanna know more then I’ve already posted about them below in The Recommender Number 3, so go have a look-see. Inspiring acts such as The Presets and Midnight Juggernauts they can do no wrong in my books – woo, and indeed, hoo!!

THE SHOES – Woah Nelly!!!! These guys are freeeeekin awesomeness personified. Totally on the button if you ask me. Another French Duo punching you with rocked-out electro beats, but before you go ranting about Justice and Daft Punk, you really need to consider this crew. I’ve been so impressed by them I simply cannot resist giving them a slot on The Recommender Number 5 (Due up real soon…), so learn more about them then.

I sincerely hope you do this time as LOOP FESTIVAL is going to be totally buzzing.

Until the next time ladies and fellas…

THE RECOMMENDER – Number 3

Welcome once again.

Sorry for the rubbishly-long delay in getting this latest post up. I’ve had no end of computer problems this last month, so been out of action. Frustrating I know, but I return with a goodie bag of the sweetest delights for you…

This time we are sticking with a relatively themed post again. If you recall it was Yorkshire last time – this time around its Australia!! I won’t be creating a theme for every Recommender, only if a grouped batch of cool bands floats my way is all. So this time Australia are in the spotlight. Again, I’m not trying to be the first, coolest or trendiest blog, so I know plenty of you out there will have heard of the following acts, but I love em too much to ignore, so thought they deserved their own post. More underground stuff in the next Recommender – promise…

CUT COPY
– I’m going to begin with these guys, coz apart from being totally ace, they are also the most established act getting a mention today. A Melbourn bunch of melody makers creating indie-dance-punk-whatever-you-call-it  on the Modular Recordings label. They’ve toured with giants such as Daft Punk, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party to name but a few which should give you a level of just how great they are. They are two albums in now (except for a mix album they’ve done for fabric), with their debut BRIGHT LIKE NEON LOVE (2004), followed more recently by IN GHOST COLOURS (March 2008). Both are worth your time. I attach a fantastic remix of one of their recent singles, ‘Lights & Music’, done by German DJ Moulinex (he’s also worth checking out if ya fancy your disco…)

THE PRESETS Another well established Oz outfit. This Sydney based two-piece have been busy making fantstic electro-indie over the last few years. Label mates with Cut Copy on Modular Recordings, they have plenty of stuff available out there, so go hunt out either their debut album, BEAMS, (released back in May 2005), or their brand spanking new album, APOCALYPTO, (released April 2008). Both are totally freaking brilliant. They are also adding many dates on a global tour to push the new album, so look out for them in a city near you soon. I’ll add the Brighton leg’s details of that tour on my next ‘Gig List’ post.

THE MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS
– About as cool as they get! I adore them and all they stand for. A Melbourne 3-piece making sublime keyboard-led, funky-guitar, danceable ace-ness. They look great, sound like they are from another world and kick ass live too. Go find their debut album, DYSTOPIA, which finally got a UK release in May 2008. I’m not attaching MP3’s here, just one of their videos, coz they too are brilliant. Enjoy.

G.L.O.V.E.S
– OK, the last of this Aussie-themed post and we are going to close with an Electro DJ who rips it up like Godzilla on the dance floor. Once again, Melbourne based (that city must have something in the water me thinks!). Real name Yama Indra, he is normally found playing keyboards for the band Damn Arms(mentioned them in previouse posts below…) who have a lighter touch than the harder sound he produces as a DJ. He’s done mucho remixing of bands ad is often found to have generated something fresh and kick-ass out of the bands hes chopped up. I’ll attach one of his original tunes. Nice.

OK, thats your lot for this post. Hope you enjoyed this foray into the exciting Australian music scene.
Next post will be a return to all things new, so look out for The Recommender number 4.

G’day mates…
Mike
