THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 18

A relatively short and sweet pointer this time around. Got a couple of gigs that are due to take your attention away from whatever it was that you were thinking of doing. It’s time to think again…

KISSY SELL OUT (DJ Set)
December and January are something of a lull on the gig scene in most towns. To be fair it’s pretty much the same in Brighton too. Christmas will have it’s parties and late drunken nights for sure, as we all dive into that relieving holiday period. January turns and it’s way too cold outside and you’re bound to wait until the pay cheque arrives before contemplating poking your nose outside of your nest. That is except for the late night blow out that is New Years Eve. This year throws up a handful of decent parties across our town, but the highlight is definitely Kissy Sell Out. Playing his usual lively, electro-funk set of wicked remixes, from the likes of Chromeo to Does It Offend You Yeah, Oh and his Gwen Stefani has to be heard to be believed! He is a master of working crowds into a frenzy and will build the perfectly-suited Digital nightclub up to a messy peak. His DJ set is due to be as part of the after party so prepare for a late one.

ACT:                    KISSY SELL OUT
VENUE:               DIGITAL, Brighton Beach
COST:                  £15.00
DATE:                 New Years Eve 2008

CANDI STATON
You heard me right. The legendary soul singer and renaissance woman hits our lucky shoreline in February. Playing at The Old Market you can expect her usual ‘best of’ collection from her 20+ albums. The best of her well known tunes include the disco classic ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ and the latter and engaging 90’s dance hit, ‘You Got The love’– a tune you have no doubt peaked to on a night out in any club from the 1990’s. She’s well known for a reason and that reason is mainly her voice. She’ll belt out the loud notes with such a volume that you won’t quite know what’s hit you. That’s a skill you never lose. This gospel singing Soul legend will be a sight to behold. Chances won’t come around for this type of legendary artist that often in our little city, so make the most of it and pop out for a trip down memory lane. All together now…”Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air…”

That’s a couple of sets that will surely get you moving. If they don’t then I suggest you check your feet are still attached!

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 13

OK, two nights out in Brighton for you. One on Halloween night and the other in early November, so get your backside’s in gear and get ready to dance until your shoes wear thin, coz these are two of the biggest DJ’s in the world right now! We are lucky and we are privileged to have them here, so make the effort because dancing to these guys is the exact reason us monkeys gave up walking on all fours…

EROL ALKAN
London-based super-DJ. Friend and remixer to just about everybody. King of the electro scene. Pioneer of the Indie scene. Producer, event organiser. This guy is everywhere! Loved by just about every scenester on the planet. Everything Erol touches seems to turn golden. With any scene, musical movement, or new powerful development in the world of music you will often find a quiet mover behind the scenes, pulling all the strings. Well Erol Alkan is that man. Having been the promoter for the last 10 years of the night Trash, (at London club The End), Erol hosted all the super-cool bands – Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem, Bloc Party etc etc. The list goes on and on. He won DJ of the year in Mixmag’s 2006 list. He’s also known for his outstanding remixes of Franz Ferdinand, Justice, Klaxons, amongst a million others. He’s also a fantastic producer, leading the way with Late Of The Pier‘s new album, Fantasy Black Channel, and is expected to throw his hands into Franz Ferdinand’s new work. His sets are so good, you can rest assured that if he’s playing it, it’s hot.

SURKIN
There’s this tidy little friendly rivalry that’s been setting up in Brighton over recent years between two event organisers – ‘Blah Blah Blah‘ and ‘Somewhere In The Universe…’. They both provide us with the world’s best dance DJ’s week after week at their respective venues – Digital and New Hero. You can see an example of Blah Blah Blah’s bookings above with Erol Alkan playing for them next month. To counter this ‘Somewhere…’ has got it’s hands on this other world class DJ – Surkin. Another Parisian-based French DJ from the fantastic Institubes label. He’s now a fully-fledged star of the thumping, fidget-house and jack-beat sound. This guy totally burns dancefloors up for kicks. Expect Brighton’s cool kids to be out for this one. He’s also a remixer for the likes of Justice, Boys Noize and Klaxons. One-nil ‘Somewhere…’ right? We will see…

ACT:                    SURKIN
VENUE:               SOMEWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE…, NEW HERO, Dyke Road, Brighton
COST:                  £7
DATE:                  Friday 31st October (Halloween)

Two superb nights out then. There’s also a bit more in November that I must pop in the next Gig List, so come back soon for more highlights from the amazing Brighton live scene.

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 8

OK, the normal thing with these ‘GIG LISTS’ is to list two seperate upcoming gigs, but I’m going to confess that I’m cheating a little here… As per usual I am featuring two artists on this GIG LIST, but the unusual thing is that they are supporting each other at the same venue at the same gig.

Reason being that both bands are so bloody great I simply cannot give them each enough focus in just one mention on a ‘GIG LIST’! At least we all know it should prove to be an outstanding night out. If you don’t go, you may as well remove your ears now due to under-use…

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS– Resplendantly popped into ‘THE RECOMMENDER 3’ way back in June, (see the archives…), this Aussie 3-piece are also well worthy of a post about their live set, because having caught them on their last UK tour I can firmly assure you that they are totally mesmerizing live. Oozing coolness from every orifice and chucking tunes at you like lightning bolts from the future, these fellas will rock this beach-fronted venue for sure.

ACT:                     MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS
VENUE:                 DIGITAL, Kings Arches, Brighton Beach
COST:                   to be confirmed

HEARTS REVOLUTION  – (Note – I will be posting all about this group in more detail in The Recommender 9). This boy/girl scenester pairing hail from New York, although originally based in LA, and they come packed out with their own distinctive brand of DIY electroclash pop wonderness. Scooped up by the awesome Franki Chan and his record label, ‘I Heart Comix’, (of which I will also be posting much more about in The Recommender 9…), this duo are headed for planet cool on a one-way ticket. Whipping up a colourful punky live set with cutting edge design, art, originality and of course brilliant tunes, you really must shift your asses to the gig early. Well before Midnight Juggernauts arrive on stage this pair will explode in a cloud of fluffy pink spikey dance, so plan for an early arrival to avoid missing your rockets departure.

I am going to be extra generous this week by attaching a video for each of the above bands. This should not only aid your opinions, but serve to help you realise just what you could be missing. Both vids are brilliantly well done with original art making them well worth an inclusion…

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS – ROAD TO RECOVERY (Directed by Krozm)

HEARTS REVOLUTION – C.Y.O.A (Directed by Jean Demery & Bastien Lattanzio)

As a foot note, please double check the listings before booking as there was a tiny bit of a contradiction between all the websites mentioning the venue at the time of writing. I’m confident Digital is correct, but no harm in being 100%.

See you back here soon for RECOMMENDER 9, with lots about the ‘I Heart Comix’ labels madness…
