THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 7

Welcome aboard number 7…

Pounding up and down the Indie and Electro streets once more, I hold aloft for you special people yet more selected peaks from the world of good choonage. This time we got two DJ’s found blasting air horns from ‘Blog House’ heaven and one tidy European pair of dreamers. These DJ’s are very well known to the blog world already, but I simply cannot resist posting about them myself. However, the last entry may not be known to your ears. Check them all though, coz they’re ALL good…

I’ll start at the beginning. Seems the best idea…OK, first mentioned in previous post The Gig List 6 this super-fly DJ is a mash up in human form. KISSY SELL OUT – the Designer, the Fashion Icon, the Global DJ, the Radio One Talent and all round Remix-Master, grew up soaking up Nirvana, warped into a Drum n Bass freak through his formative years and came out of it all a pioneer of Indie-Electro remix super-sets. And he’s only 23 years old!! Easy on the ears, his taste for blends are as good as they get. With a massive remix back catalogue including Chromeo, Mark Ronson, R.E.M and Gwen Steffani, amongst many others, he specialises in turning the pop world into ultra-slick dance-floor filler. Truly outstanding.

Second in command in this edition, is another sublime Blog House DJ, this time from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The electric LE CASTLE VANIA, (aka Dylan Eiland), has been busting dance floors globally. With his trademark Emo-style, white-lightning hairstyle, skinny jeans and trainers that look like they were bought in a Nike boutique in a planetary system many light years away, his array of colours only serve to add to his level of cool. Dropping super-massive beats you will see Dylan pumping fists and jumping up and down behind the decks as much as the adoring fans on the dance floor in front of him. Excitable and contagiously energetic, his banging remixes and original productions are fuzzy, chunky, pounding electro of the highest order. Tasteeeeee.

Coming in third today are a gorgeous girl/boy pairing from Zurich, Switzerland, going by the name of DIVISION KENT. They bounce out melodic electronic music with a guitar sound and a sweeping atmosphere. It’s really quite beautiful. I attach my favourite track below for you, Superstitious. They are two albums in now, with their latest work entitled ‘Gravity’, so please go and track that down if you fancy more.

Hoping to get a new Q&A completed shortly with both Kissy Sell Out and Le Castle Vania posted up real soon, so look out for those in the future. I just gotta catch them when we all get a spare minute. This blog is growing so fast I may even have to source another contributer to match the demand, so watch this space.

See you back here real soon…

HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 1

OK, here’s a new section I wanna start up. It’s a teeny-tiny mini-post for things that float past my ears that I simply cannot resist posting about. It’s not enough for it’s own ‘Recommender’ or ‘Gig List’, but well worthy of my fingers being wagged in its direction fervently. So here it is in all it’s glory – no explanation, no reasons, just click away and kick back…

How good was that!!!???

Phew – I feel so much better now…

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 4

It’s been a few weeks, so sorry for the delay, but it’s…well…tough shit, and quite frankly I got a whole load of sweet and magical posts to swing by your ears so you are soon going to luuurve me for forever, so sit back, read away and click, upload and prepare to watch me fly…

With this Gig List I’m gonna focus solely on the upcoming LOOP FESTIVAL based in Brighton’s busy centre on 16th August. What a totally super-sweet line up it’s forged for this year. After last years success this is now an annual event and the set up is going from strength to strength. In a city known for its new music scenester festivals and particularly for breaking acts, Loop stands tall.

Amongst others, this year holds up; New Young Pony Club, The Bays, Caged Baby, , Primary One, Transformers and the fantastically named Holy Fuck. Nice!

However, I’m blowing my top over the following two awesome bands…CUT COPY and THE SHOES. Both are right up there with the best in both cracking tunes and blinding live sets.  Brightons going to swing until it goes boom!

CUT COPY – As tasty as Indie-Dance gets quite frankly. If you wanna know more then I’ve already posted about them below in The Recommender Number 3, so go have a look-see. Inspiring acts such as The Presets and Midnight Juggernauts they can do no wrong in my books – woo, and indeed, hoo!!

ACT:                     CUT COPY
VENUE:
LOOP FESTIVAL, HUB STAGE, VICTORIA GARDENS
COST:                   £25  (£32 for after-party club access)
DATE:                   16th August 2008
WEBSITE:               http://loopbrighton.com/

THE SHOES – Woah Nelly!!!! These guys are freeeeekin awesomeness personified. Totally on the button if you ask me. Another French Duo punching you with rocked-out electro beats, but before you go ranting about Justice and Daft Punk, you really need to consider this crew. I’ve been so impressed by them I simply cannot resist giving them a slot on The Recommender Number 5 (Due up real soon…), so learn more about them then.

ACT:
                     THE SHOES
VENUE:                 LOOP FESTIVAL, FUTURES STAGE, VICTORIA GARDENS
COST:                   £25  (£32 for after-party club access)

OK I got soooo much to post I’m bursting at the seam so I’m going to leave it there, except to say that The Presets were amazing at Digital the other day, so I hope you were there to enjoy it too. If not, then what ya doing!!!? Shoulda listened to your old faithful ‘Gig List’ eh!!!?

I sincerely hope you do this time as LOOP FESTIVAL is going to be totally buzzing.

Until the next time ladies and fellas…

Mike

THE GIG LIST – Number 2

Late Of The PierMSTRKRFT

OK, time for the second edition of your ever-so-useful ‘Gig List’. I’ll be pointing out a couple of bright upcoming shows, local to Brighton, that will be well worth your investigation.

The rest is up to you : check out the bands, locate the tickets, get to the venue etc. My aim is to simply make you better informed. Nice.

The first is Late Of The Pier. An indie four-piece from Castle Donnington, they have attracted mucho attention from the new music press and boundless numbers of frantic teenagers across the country. They also seem to have been rubber-stamped by none other than the Electro godfather, Erol Alkan, who has helped produce and also remixed some of thier work to date. They’ve also supported such giants as Soulwax and Justice live. Go check the Myspace to hear them and find out more, as this band are very hard to describe, suffice to say the guitars and keyboards play out an iteresting mix thats like no others. Having seen them live myself earlier this year I can confidently say that their set is a wonder to behold. Excitable and catchy, they’ll get the venue going for sure.

ACT:                       LATE OF THE PIER
VENUE:                   BRIGHTON BARFLY
COST:                     £ 7
DATE:                     Thursday 8th May 2008
WEBSITE:                www.myspace.com/lateofthepier

The second of this editions gig listings will be for a Canadian Duo hailing out of Toronto called MSTRKRFT. Electro-rock madness is their theme, with a notoriously riotous live set. These guys will be loud and should rock this venue’s dancing shoes right off your very feet. They enjoy a long list of remixes for just about eveyone from Justice to Juliet And The Licks to Kylie to Chromeo to Bloc Party. They have even been known to revisit their old band Death From Above 1979 for a remix. This event at the Ocean Rooms is pulling more and more fantastic new acts through its doors and is causing a real stir in Brighton now, so well done to Henron and co for grabbing yet another hot show.

ACT:                        MSTRKRFT
EVENT:                    Somewhere In The Universe There Must Be Something Better Than Man
VENUE:                   OCEAN ROOMS
COST:                      £ 11
DATE:                      Saturday 3rd May 2008
WEBSITE:                 www.myspace.com/MSTRKRFT

How very exciting indeed.

Don’t forget the NME Riot gig at Concorde 2 thats coming up! (see The Gig List – number 1, below). We have our tickets – do you have yours????

As usual, feel free to let me know if you’re joining us. You can always find out more about my musical goings-on here : www.myspace.com/miguelos.

THE GIG LIST – Number 1

crystal-castles.jpgsoulwax.jpg

Hi Everyone

OK here is the first ever edition of ‘THE GIG LIST’ on my blog. The aim of this is to simply point out a couple of upcoming gigs, local to Brighton, that I believe will be well worth your investigation.

The rest is over to you – Check out the bands, locate the tickets, get to the venue, etc. My aim is only to make you better informed. Nice.

This week I’m pointing out two gigs that should prove to be outstanding.

The first is a pair of giants in the dance industry and kings of the remix –SOULWAX, or as some of you may also know them – 2 MANY DJs. The Belgium duo have been experimenting and chopping up dance floors like nobody else across the world for years now. Thank your lucky stars you have a new opportunity to see them once again in Brighton…

ACT:                        SOULWAX / 2 MANY DJs
VENUE:                   Concorde 2
COST:                      £ 17.00
DATE:                      Wednesday 23rd April 2008
WEBSITE LINK:       www.myspace.com/soulwax

The second gig is an NME promotion coming to our town. It is part of their ‘New Noise Tour’. This Brighton leg involves four upcoming bands, one of which is the Toronto two-piece, CRYSTAL CASTLES, a fantastically brilliant electro-punk outfit. Another on the bill I am particularly fond of is new indie band, FRIENDLY FIRES. Well worth a few pounds of your money.

ACT:                   CRYSTAL CASTLES, FRIENDLY FIRES, TEAM WATERPOLO, WHITE LIES
EVENT:                    NME New Noise Tour
VENUE:                   Concorde 2
COST:                      £ 9.00
DATE:                      Monday 5th May 2008
WEBSITE LINK:      www.nme.com

I hope this helps fill at least one night out for you, (if not two!). Remember, I’m always interested to hear if you are joining us.

If you’re really keen on finding out more about my musical tastes and recommendations, then please go to : www.myspace.com/miguelos
