HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 37

THE REMIXES – PART 7 – STARSMITH

Starsmith, (real name Fin Dow-Smith), recently messaged us an update, which we’re pleased to say clarifies his current position.  To date we’ve known him as the producer behind Ellie Goulding‘s album, as well as playing alongside her live.  With her debut album due for a release in early 2010, we knew Fin’s work was virtually complete there, so what was a well connected talent such as Starsmith going to do next?

Well, the 21 year old is putting his music degree to good use, making sure he carves out his own solo career, rather than simply being the big bang behind other future starlets.  Having first arrived with the backing of the independent Neon Gold label, he has now signed his own record deal with Island (!) and we are pleased to confirm that he’s finally setting about producing his own songs.  He hopes that his own debut album should be ready for September 2010 and it will of course include Ellie Goulding as a guest vocalist, with the first single due around April.

Of course signing to a major record label, confirming guest vocalists of that caliber and planning release dates is all rather surprising, considering he hasn’t yet written or recorded any of his own original material!!  Well, when you have Ellie’s extraordinary tunes, as well as his plentiful remix catalogue, the picture becomes a lot clearer.

It’s this remix material that we are focussing on today, and our Remix Specials are fast becoming a set of hallowed halls, having previous listed giants such as:  Soulwax,  Bloc Party,  The TwelvesThe Golden Filter,  The Shoes and DiscoTech on past editions.  Starsmith’s golden touch adds his trademark wealth of electro synths, shameless 80s influences and bouncing beats.  Looks like Ellie’s going to have some stiff competition in 2010 then…

THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 20

Welcome back. The blog world is awash with buzz at the moment, as it always seems to be at the start of  a new year. The Xmas period is typically left to the pop charts and a bit of a wasteland for good quality new music as bands wait to launch their assault until the new year. Interestingly it’s the classic pop tune that’s getting a mention here for acts that will undoubtedly blow up as big as anything you know in 2009. They write pop tunes you always used to like, when the charts weren’t so commercially comfortable and saturated. Enjoy…

V V BROWN
Where to start? This London-based solo artist is about as eye catching as you could possibly imagine. We’ve said it before and we”ll say it again, if 2008 was the year of ‘the unexpected’, then 2009 will surely be the year of the ‘female solo artist’. Part of the pack that’s about to stop the charts in their tracks is V V Brown. With an inspired California sound that has a heavy 1950’s style, her music is self-described as ‘Doo Wop Indie’ – I couldn’t have described it any better! She’s like nothing else you’ve ever heard and already getting remixed by the likes of The Dust Brothers and Andy Weatherall. She would suit a support slot alongside Dion & The Belmonts as much as she would Amy Winehouse. Her image is powerful and original, looking dressed to kill in most photo’s and videos we’ve ever seen.  She’s a multi-instrumentalist, showing off her talents with keyboards and her one-string guitar, but it is with her confident, powerful vocals that she really hits the home run. I’m excited about catching her live set – I’ll be the one at the front doing the mash potato…

FRANKMUSIK
Just when you thought music was starting to get a little bit too samey through 2008, a new year turns and the latest batch of artists burst through, revitalising the various scenes. After the awesomeness of Justice a few years back the scene flooded with ‘Electro’. After the originality of the Klaxons there seemed to be a whole swathe of fashionista ‘Nu Rave’ copycats. Once the Arctic Monkeys blew us away with their power-Indie, a million others tried to take the throne. All of this only led to a watering down of their respective scenes, so it is with a refreshing gulp that the above V V Brown and now also Frankmusik brings us all back up for air in 2009. Frankmusik brings us a house 4-beat backing with a pounding pop pace, all linked up with his TomChaplin-esque vocals. It all wraps up well without getting too tacky. He’s a strong singer and that keeps it all above the line. NME magazine are all over him, which surprises us, but that’s how the future’s lining up it seems. Be prepared for lots of Frankmusik throughout 2009.

THE SOUND OF ARROWS
This Swedish 2-piece are plucked straight from a place of purest pop. The kind of place where the clouds are a fluffy pastel pink and people talk of heaven and say things like “my goodness”, rather than “for fuck sake!!!” We gotta admit it’s not the sort of place The Recommender usually finds itself, but these guys have lured us there and we’ve fallen for their magic. Which, incidentally, turns out to be the exact name of their second single – ‘M.A.G.I.C.’ , which is released in January from the label that’s gaining more and more interest lately, Labrador Records. Their first single, Danger, (listed below), is the tune that’s trapped us in this sick place. It’s awesome, breezy pop at its very best. It’s camp and uplifting, but sits just the right side of cool, like MGMT, The Beach Boys, or even fellow Scandinavians, Super Jupiter. Great melodies, a wall of sound set of vocals, sharp synths and a sometimes delicate but sometimes crashing beat. Totally brilliant.

So that’s another packed edition, full of artists many people tip for great things in 2009. Remember their names, check out their other works, as all of them have a big box of tricks at their disposal.
