HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 43 – THE KNOCKS

THE REMIXES – PART 8 – THE KNOCKS

This week The Knocks release, on Heavy Roc Records, their own original work with the single Blackout.  It’s given us a chance to reflect upon their body of work to date and when you check out their numerous remixes we think you’ll agree they deserve to join the lofty ranks on our remix specials. You can judge for yourselves by browsing our previous seven selections, with posts that include remix catalogues by:  Starsmith, The Shoes, The Golden Filter, The Twelves, DiscoTech, Bloc Party and Soulwax.

Today’s New York duo have an incredible ability to tickle commercial pop tunes into a whippy, thumping new blend.  Ben Ruttner (DJ B-Roc) and James Patterson (JPatt) were carved out of the hip hop scene and they bring the same confidence to a broad selection of major artists, twisting their tunes into new batch of beat-heavy cocktails.

They’ve particularly attached themselve to the artists familiar to a lot of us via the Neon Gold stable, with remixes for Marina & The Diamonds, Ellie Goulding and more recently Samuel and Yes Giantess, whose debut albums they’ve been asked to produce.  This all follows their reworking of Jay-Z’s American Gangster, having paired up with DJ Benzi in the studio, renaming it American G-Funk.

We list below a selection of their remixes alongside their new single, Blackout.  All of these tunes have their recognisable stamp, with plenty of fearless groove and smooth gloss.  It’s music designed for the summer sunshine and buzzing outdoor party, aiming directly for your derriere, which we fully expect to be shaking along, whether you like it or not.

GOOD NEWS for The Recommender…

I’ve received confirmation that this blog now has permission to upload and contain any photographic images by three of LA’s finest style photographers. Their images are to be found at the top of every How Good Is This!!!??? section from here on in. It’s just that photography is a passion of mine and quite frankly there’s nothing wrong with cranking up the cool factor on your blog as far as I’m concerned…

All three are super-keen scenesters of the Los Angeles cooler-than-cool club scene. They document various beautiful people at just about every club and party event worth being at. They have that natural gift to capture hipster-culture and their fantastic eye for a moment provides us with a wealth of work.

As a personal thank you to Mark, Rony and William for emailing me with their confirmed permissions and messages, I’m going to list the tune that is not only a top-drawer club thumper, but that also details the precise scene that these photographers extensively cover so effortlessly in LA.

HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 11

This came out about 2 years ago, so is nothing new, but it is however one of the finest remix/mash-ups going in my opinion. I love it and just in case you don’t yet own it, you can now love it too. Ahhh…

I beleive there are rules to a really good remix, mash-up or cover. You have to get something new from it. I believe it has to twist the original song into something fresh. Like a good cocktail, the original ingredients may individually be perfectly consumable, but mixed well they perform a whole new sensation.

Great examples could be MGMT‘s ‘Kids‘ recently remixed by Soulwax at one end of the spectrum, or the cover of Nine Inch Nails‘ ‘Hurt‘ by Johnny Cash at the other. Both created something outstanding.

The remix I list below is a blend of a Kanye West track, ‘Get Em high’ and The Knife‘s ‘Heartbeats‘, all chopped up by the fantastic A-Trak. He is the DJ and all-round master turntablist for Kanye on tour. We love all three of them.

Enjoy.

HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 9

I barely ever write about Justice themselves. Being so central to one of my scenes, Electro, you would think they would be all over this blog. I do often refer to them and I use them in context for other acts or DJs, but I hardly ever write about Justice themselves. They’ve never had a ‘Recommender’, ‘Gig List’ or ‘How Good Is This…’ posting before. This is mainly because there really isn’t much left to say about them that hasn’t already been said a billion times.

Although Justice are very much Daft Punk’s pumped-up children, they are still the modern behemoths of the Electro scene. With their super-massive album, , released in 2007, they took the global Electro scene by the balls and thus thousands of Electro blogs went crazy for them. With The Recommender only being born in March 2008 I therefore simply couldn’t add any more that would contribute further. However, this will change as new releases arrive from them.

This posting has come about because, whilst I was away on my holidays in Europe, they released the news that they are due to bring out a DVD in November 2008 entitled, A Cross The Universe, showcasing a kind of ‘year in the life…’ documentary. Created by Roamin Gavram, So-Me, and Justice, it’s brought to you by Ed Banger Records. I attach the trailer for the DVD below to get you excited.

Watching this and the other clip below it of them performing in New York made me think of just how awesome they are live and how seeing them at The Astoria last year was one of the best live gigs I’ve ever been to. You’ve never seen a crowd go this ape-shit!

For all those Recommender fans that have ever caught Justice live – this is for you…

I cannot wait to catch them again some day and be sure that if they release any new material soon, I’ll be all over it.

 THE REMIXES – PART 2 – SOULWAX

On the back of the ‘How Good Is This…’ Bloc Party remix special, I’ve decided to do another remix-based dedication on this post. This time it will be for the re-edit kings themselves – Soulwax.

With their wardrobe now packed full of some of the finest remixes in existence, these guys can show off a set of absolutely fantastic efforts. They totally abide by the remix and mashup rules of trying to create something genuinely original out of the pickings of other artist’s songs. And what a job they’ve done over recent years, including their very latest touch of brilliance on the tune ‘Kids’ by MGMT.

The Belgium team are often found grabbing tunes from non-dance based artists, from The Rolling Stones to Dolly Parton to The Gossip, and they always manage to produce proper dance-floor fillers. Great records to pull out at the peak of any party, these Electro legends can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned.

We all know they released an album of their remixes in 2007, but I just wanted to shove a selected handful from their vast collection of blends here on The Recommender. Enjoy…

You may find that your feet begin to tap and your arms may well wave involuntarily as a consequence of listening to these tunes, but don’t worry, that’s a perfectly healthy response.

The new RECOMMENDER 13 will be posted up soon, so get your ass back here real soon for plenty more involuntary movements.

HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 6

Another mini-post for today. Thought I’d share this with you coz it made me laugh.

A music video of the highest geekdom (think Napoleon Dynamite on roller skates). The video needs to be watched to the very end for the full effect.

The tune is ‘You Know’ by Super Jupiter, a camped-up Scandinavian trio. A little too camp for me perhaps, but I secretly love it.

Until the next post then…darlings.

HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 2

OK, time for another tidy little mini-post…

I will be doing this when something, no matter how random, passes past me that I cannot help but share with you. Could be from any genre in any format, just so long as its blindingly brilliant…and this one is!!!

A couple of years ago I saw the band KASABIAN live. Now I’ve been to a shit load of gigs, (13nr Reading Festivals and 4nr Glastonbury’s amongst many, many others), and seeing Kasabian pretty much reset the bar for everything I’ve seen live since. That’s everything, ever.

I cannot recommend an Indie band more than this lot when it comes to a right show. I came across this Youtube post and it took me back there. The way frontman Tom Meighan draws you all in and involves the crowd is one thing, but above all, its the way the whole band seem to give it their all and genuinely get wrapped up in the moment as much as the crowd.

I challenge anyone to give me an example of a better ‘show-closer’ than LSF. Here it is live from a gig last year. Enjoy it – particularly 3mins and 18 secs in when he lets the crowd go for it. Brilliant, just totally brilliant!
