THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 33

We are about to get not one but two white-hot record labels represented in town, as both Paris’ Kitsune and Frankie Chan‘s IHEARTCOMIX arrive to showcase bands at Concorde 2. You simply cannot afford to miss this!

CHEW LIPS

On this particular section on The Recommender we scavenge our local city’s horizons to locate the best nights out that Brighton can offer. Within our vibrant music scene there are many good promoters, but none reappear on this blog more than the events that have one particular man involved. We always serve up two great nights out on this Gig List and this fella has somewhow managed to get a mention for both of his upcoming events. He goes by the name Henron and has a particularly impressive ability to book cutting edge acts. His latest adventure carries his new regular event, named Horsepower, to one of Brighton’s most successful mid-sized venues, Concorde 2. To kick this new night off he brings to town some truly amazing talent. First on, Recommender favourites, The Golden Filter, who have recently completed a Q&A with us here. Second on stage will be the mind-blowing showmanship of Chew Lips, Camden’s hottest talents, with the beautiful singer Tiggs and her signature energetic display and their adorable, synth-heavy, 8-bit tunes. Finishing the night off will be a DJ set by none other than the IHEARTCOMIX label’s Designer Drugs. In an unusual but fantastic twist, there will also be a discount rummage sale from the trendy fashion label, American Apparel, as well as other well known Brighton brands, set up in the corner. It doesn’t get much more hipster than this.

CASIOKIDS

Henron’s second event will be located at his normal underground scenester venue, New Hero. Here he showcases the Norwegian pop sensations that are Casiokids. A five piece that always get out of bed the right side it seems, so positively contagious is their energy. They have to be witnessed to be believed, as they bounce around the stage like a bunch of children, (were they supplied with nothing but McDonalds and Smarties for the previous month!). Constantly swapping instruments, blink and you will find the guy that was playing the piano is now playing the drums, whilst the drummer’s picked up a guitar! It’s their amazing ability to always give an outstanding performance, playing with such broad smiles, that always gets the crowd bouncing. For this they are worth their weight in gold, let alone the required £5. This will be their first return to Brighton since they played the Loop Festival a couple of months ago, so if you missed them on that occasion do not repeat the mistake! Henron has done it again and the place will be packed, so book your tickets as soon as you can. He always encourages a sense of abandonment in his home venue, with his nights always feeling like more of a college party than a club night. Prepare to be doing Casiokid congas around the dancefloor.

THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 19

And so we’ve finally got past the post and we can now wave goodbye to 2008. A year in which The Recommender blog began and in which it soon blossomed into the gorgeous monster it is today. It proved to be an awesome year of music to begin such a task and so looking back through the archives there’s now a treasure trove of gems to plunder. 2009 is already looking like it’s going to burst with brilliance as Pop, Disco, Electro and Indie continue to evolve. The Recommender’s in a great position to evolve right alongside them.

FAN DEATH
This is one of my favourite finds of 2008 and they look to be heading into your stereo/ipod/club/head, ( – delete as appropriate), throughout 2009. A female two-piece that hail from Vancouver, Canada, and who are produced by none other than the Electro godfather himself, Erol Alkan. As we well know, anything he tends to pick out, (like a Monty Python-esque hand reaching out from the clouds), is always totally awesome and Fan Death are no different. He has also remixed them to brilliant effect. These girls have also been busy remixing, producing a notably decent version of Ladyhawke‘s ‘My Delirium’. They are a delight to hear. For when this duo go all disco, they bring along handclaps and strings like a 70’s blur. When they slow it down, they chime with layered vocals and simple chords. Either way, it’s always tuneful and fantastically melodic. Catchy and brimming with classic pop, they seem almost timeless.

WE HAVE BAND
Now over to my new favourite band. I love love love them. And with good reason. Us bloggers always ignorantly consider ourselves something of a set of tastemakers, but even we have to have a source. I don’t quite know how they manage to do it, but the awesome French label, Kitsune, always manage to plug into the latest ‘cool’ at it’s very freshest and best. Us blog writers may well be music journalists, band members, DJs or scenesters etc, but the true feed of all things new and incredibly cool often seems to involve Kitsune somewhere in the mix. Once again they’ve produced another true diamond of a band. The 3-piece from London tick all our boxes, with their blend of electronic, melodic funk. It’s upbeat, joyous stuff, with the flick of a guitar, the buzz of a synth and the overlapping vocals making it a great, layered sound. It has that DIY feel of a LCD Soundsystem tune, which is about as spot on as we need things to be here at The Recommender. I’m in love.

OFFICIALS SECRET ACT
We have loved all the guitar-led, pop-funk Indie sounds coming out of Australia through 2008, (often from the Modular Record label), in the likes of Midnight Juggernauts, (see Recommender 3 from way back) or Empire Of The Sun(see future Recommender posts), but sadly there’s something missing from them all that until now I haven’t managed to put my finger on…Well, now I get it – it’s the ‘UK factor’! Official Secrets Act are precisely what’s helped me find the UK difference. Their sound is not quite the same as these Australian Modular bands, oh no, and perhaps that’s the point, but they represent an ingredient that I’d overlooked. It’s something only bands from the UK seem to produce. A little sharpness, a little edge and a little less over produced than their Indie cousins across the waters. It’s a sound that’s still upbeat Indie guitaring, but it has more variety and depth to it and of course there’s something about an English accent that’s simply less glam, but that’s a good thing. A change of pace here, a singalong chorus there. This London 4-piece do it so well. This post is dedicated to that UK factor. Long may it reign.

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 12

Here’s another Gig List for you lovely people. Got a couple of nights out at one of Brighton’s best venues: Concorde 2. This mid-sized venue, that’s operated in Brighton for many years, often plays host to some of the best acts that have floated through town. Although I’m only posting about two gigs, there’s actually seven bands on show, all of which are looking white hot.

THE WHIP
We like The Whip very much here at The Recommender. They just about manage to tick all the boxes – great basslines that move your feet for you, a cooler-than-cool swagger to their tunes, a fashionable attire, electro squiggles throughout etc etc. They’re a brilliant example of Electro-Indie, where so many bands have fallen short before them. It’s music you can really dance to – with lyrics. A great combo. Hailing from Manchester, this 4-piece are well worth an evening out. They hit our beloved Concorde 2 venue with some of the finest support slots I’ve seen in ages. Namely; Pnau and Transformer. Get there soon enough to catch them all and you will get one hell of a lovely earful. Aren’t we the lucky ones!?

ACT:                    THE WHIP
VENUE:                CONCORDE 2, Brighton
COST:                  £ 8.50

KITSUNE
Arguably THE finest record label in the entire world (OK, OK, please don’t bash my message box too much about Modular, Ed Banger and everybody else…). As well as being a Parisian boutique fashion brand, this Kitsune label have released on thier books the likes of DigitalismFox & Wolf, Autokratz and Simian Mobile Disco, amongst many others. They regularly provide us with their famous compilation albums, (they’re now on number 6), with tracks from artists that encompass the melodic electro that the label so often pursues. These albums often become taste-makers for the global scene. They kick off a tour to back up the latest album’s launch, with the likes of Autokratz, Punks Jump Up, Beni and the fantastic Heartsrevolution on show. It really doesn’t get a lot better than that for a night out. Check out the label, fall in love with the artists, and definitely get your ass down to Concorde 2 for this gig.

ACT:               AUTOKRATZ, PUNKS JUMP UP, BENI, HEARTSREVOLUTION
VENUE:              CONCORDE 2
COST:                £ 5.00   (Free before 11:30pm)
DATE:                Thursday 20th November 2008

OK, so thats two separate evenings, in one week, at one venue, in one town – What a great example of how fine Brighton is for live music. See you there…
