HOW GOOD IS THIS!!!??? – NUMBER 34

THE REMIXES – PART 6 – THE SHOES

So busy are this French double act that we weren’t sure if it was actually possible to complete a comprehensive catalogue of their remixes! There’s millions out there! OK, so perhaps not quite that many, but this is the biggest Remix Special that we’ve ever done, following our previous editions covering The Golden Filter, The Twelves, Bloc Party, DiscoTech and Soulwax.

We think The Shoes are head and shoulders above most when it comes to blending up other people’s tunes. They add a distinctive, but always brilliant, pounding four beat. The kind of beat that dance music was born for. The kind of beat that moves your legs for you. They add their perfect pace, together with a few chopped up synths, but like all the best remixers they respectfully maintain a lot of the orignal track and vocals.

JUST A BAND – WE ARE (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
MARINA & THE DIAMONDS – I AM NOT A ROBOT (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
ESSER – WORK IT OUT (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
33Hz – I FEEL ALIVE (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
THE GOLDEN SILVERS – ARROWS OF EROS (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
TELEPATHE – CHROMES ON IT (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
PRIMARY 1 – HOLD ME DOWN (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
CANDY CLASH – JUST HER KISS (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
THE VIRGINS – TEEN LOVERS (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
THE CHEEK – SLOW KIDS (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
LATE OF THE PIER – FOCKER (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
LADYHAWKE – DUSK TILL DAWN (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
MYSTERY JETS – YOUNG LOVE (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi
GET CAPE WEAR CAPE FLY – WAITING FOR THE MONSTER TO DROWN (THE SHOES REMIX) ysi

OK, as always please dutifully comment about those remixes we missed. We know there’s a couple of remixes floating out there they’ve done for Wiley, Hadouken and something they did with Those Kids, but we have to sleep sometimes.

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 16

So as The Recommender blog looks ahead to 2009 we find there’s plenty of bright highlights that we can already look forward to. The spring is looking particularly sweet, with two of the UK’s shining examples of powerful Indie turning up to blow us away. Enjoy.

LATE OF THE PIER

Having had the magical hands of the dance legend Erol Alkan helping to produce their debut album they are continuing to blow up in the UK scenes. We first caught them live supporting Justice at The Astoria in London and it proved to be one hell of a ticket as they threw out a highly energetic performance. They are all danceable, space age Indie with a unique sound. They’re a superbly creative and artistic group, who prove to have a mesmerising live set so pop down to Concorde 2, a venue that’s a perfect size for them at this stage of their careers, for a night to remember.

ACT:                     LATE OF THE PIER
VENUE:                 CONCORDE 2
COST:                   £ 9.50
DATE:                   Wednesday 18th February 2009

THE ENEMY

Another look ahead to 2009 and we see that these guys are heading into town. They may be an big band, in a big venue, but that’s nothing compared to the size of their live sound. They’ve gone from strength to strength since bringing out their debut album in early 2007 and their thumping, sing-along songs are perfect for a live set. Massive chords and pounding beats are thrown at the crowd with a buzzing energy that’s not been seen since the pomp of Kasabian or the attitude of Oasis, (two bands that definitely have more than a little drip of inspiration in The Enemy’s sound and character). Tom leads the line brilliantly with his chest stuck out and a snarling grit in his voice. This gig is part of a lengthy UK tour which will no doubt sell out everywhere, so grab yourself a ticket for them whilst you still can.

ACT:                     THE ENEMY

Make sure you keep up to date with The Recommender through 2009 as we continue to bring you the world’s musical highlights. The ride goes on…

THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 9

Theme-time once more people. Got a guy so freaking cool, he’s built up an enormously brilliant record label ram-jammed with some of the best bands and scenesters known to the blog world. This Recommender is going to be all about him and those acts he has so lovingly shared with us over recent years.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you FRANKI CHAN and the IHEARTCOMIX record label…

Search online and you will find an abundance of mp3’s, info and links with Franki Chan’s name sprawled all over them. Amongst many others his IHEARTCOMIX label has accrued acts such as: HEARTSREVOLUTION, Toxic Avenger, Ocelot, Totally Michael, Matt & Kim and Acid Girls. Super-cool!!!! They claim to be “dedicated to challenging the music industry standards by embracing the ever evolving sound of our generation“. Perfect if you ask me…

The label also comes in other successful guises – as a radio show, a website, an event promoter, a world-class blog, an online clothing store and an online tv show, making them one of the best party crews in existence.

But I actually want to speak a little about the man.

FRANKI CHAN

This is a fantastic story of an underdog. Moving to Los Angeles, California from his home in Indiana, Franki quickly set out to penetrate the vibrant local music scene.

Joining up with the famous Steve Aoki, of Dim Mak Records fame, (see The Recommender 6 in the archives…), they ran an event on Tuesdays at the well-known Cinespace nightclub.

Sadly, after a period of success, it blew up in Franki’s face, (perhaps self-inflicted?), forcing an acrimonious and bitter split between them both. Steve Aoki, coming from the wealthy background, with the famous acting family and roots in LA, did his best to suppress Franki it seems, but our man persevered, regrouped and developed the IHEARTCOMIX label into the success it is today.

Not satisfied with a simple label to take up his time, he is also a talented illustrator with a comic book obsession, a musician, a DJ and is even sometimes found behind the drums for HEARTSREVOLUTION. What about sleep!!?? Not for this guy.

So this Recommender is for you Franki. The two bands below are on his label. Enjoy…

HEARTSREVOLUTION

Boy / Girl combo – CHECK! Fashionable and goodlooking – CHECK! New York, Tokyo, LA and Paris heritage – CHECK! Cooler than cool punk-electro tunes – CHECK! As I’ve previously mentioned in GIG LIST 8 (see archives…), this tasty cute couple, also known as Ben & Lo, are bouncing all over the world in the upcoming IHEARTCOMIX tour, supporting the fantastic Midnight Juggernauts (in the UK). Like a more listenable Crystal Castles, these scenesters are shaking just about everything shakeable. Over in the States, these guys are well known for throwing parties out of their ‘Hearts Challenger’pink ice cream van, which strangely and yet totally candidly also sells goofy sweets and Japanese toys! These guys turn up at parties randomly and jam out the back of the van for all to turn to. Original and totally ace, they also adopted the UK artist and fashion designer, Kate Moross, to help design their live sets and imagery. Kate is just about as wonderful a touch as I can imagine, adding art and creativity in places no other band could reach. They are dedicated to progressing the state of music and pushing change in all the right places. Thing is…do you embrace such change? Of course you do…

TOXIC AVENGER

Here we are with another post, so it seems inevitable we have yet another masked, electro, French DJ to show off! I figure there must be a factory in the outskirts of Paris throwing these guys out or something!!! Maybe they’re all actually robots distributed globally as part of some evil master plan, with a planetary mission to blow up all our favourite clubs?!? I blame Daft Punk! Anyways, this fella is all saturated, squelchy bounce. He always provides good quality tunes and he’s also been busy creating superb remixes for all our favourite people, such as: Late Of The Pier, Le Castle Vania, The Whip, Chromeo and many others! Thankfully he now has his first full official EP on release (14th September), called ‘Superheroes’. I give you the ‘Mixhell Earplugged’ remix of this tune because I love love love it! Oh and lastly – his mask is the best yet…

OK, thats enough for this edition. Quite a long post I know. Phew. Time for a sit down, as your grandad would say. Until the next rave-up then. Look out for The Recommender on other blogs and media, as I’m now being asked to be interviewed, to be part of other movements and to generally spread the word. Nice.

Go forth and multiply…

THE GIG LIST – Number 2

Late Of The PierMSTRKRFT

OK, time for the second edition of your ever-so-useful ‘Gig List’. I’ll be pointing out a couple of bright upcoming shows, local to Brighton, that will be well worth your investigation.

The rest is up to you : check out the bands, locate the tickets, get to the venue etc. My aim is to simply make you better informed. Nice.

The first is Late Of The Pier. An indie four-piece from Castle Donnington, they have attracted mucho attention from the new music press and boundless numbers of frantic teenagers across the country. They also seem to have been rubber-stamped by none other than the Electro godfather, Erol Alkan, who has helped produce and also remixed some of thier work to date. They’ve also supported such giants as Soulwax and Justice live. Go check the Myspace to hear them and find out more, as this band are very hard to describe, suffice to say the guitars and keyboards play out an iteresting mix thats like no others. Having seen them live myself earlier this year I can confidently say that their set is a wonder to behold. Excitable and catchy, they’ll get the venue going for sure.

ACT:                       LATE OF THE PIER
VENUE:                   BRIGHTON BARFLY
COST:                     £ 7
DATE:                     Thursday 8th May 2008
WEBSITE:                www.myspace.com/lateofthepier

The second of this editions gig listings will be for a Canadian Duo hailing out of Toronto called MSTRKRFT. Electro-rock madness is their theme, with a notoriously riotous live set. These guys will be loud and should rock this venue’s dancing shoes right off your very feet. They enjoy a long list of remixes for just about eveyone from Justice to Juliet And The Licks to Kylie to Chromeo to Bloc Party. They have even been known to revisit their old band Death From Above 1979 for a remix. This event at the Ocean Rooms is pulling more and more fantastic new acts through its doors and is causing a real stir in Brighton now, so well done to Henron and co for grabbing yet another hot show.

EVENT:                    Somewhere In The Universe There Must Be Something Better Than Man

How very exciting indeed.

Don’t forget the NME Riot gig at Concorde 2 thats coming up! (see The Gig List – number 1, below). We have our tickets – do you have yours????

As usual, feel free to let me know if you’re joining us. You can always find out more about my musical goings-on here : www.myspace.com/miguelos.

Until the next time,
Mike
