THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 22

February has been one set after another of interesting bands and DJ’sand this seems to continue to the month’s end and into March with these two fantastic, fresh artists. Both are from wildly different genres, showing what eclectic taste Brighton can happily cater for. Both are innovators breaking through so catch them now to see where their respective genres are being taken…

THE HAIR
Never before have a band popped so neatlyinto my Indie comfort zone. If you like your Indie music with plenty of bounce, catchy hooks and Casio keys, then Sam and the boys will deliver a similar fate upon your comfort zones too. This Leeds and York 4-piece have been written about way back on The Recommender number 2and Sam was also interviewed for this blog back in this Q & A, so those hardened Recommenderfans will surely be familiar with this outfit by now. For those new to them you could do no better than catching their live set. Frontman Sam will sweat out as lively set of the finest, spikey, Indie riffs. Their sound is a mix up of  The Sunshine Underground and The Rapture, so full of the best pumping ceremony you could wish for in any energetic Indie band. Their debut album, Indecisions, was kindly sent to me prior to it’s final induction and release and even unpolished these guys sound great. The debut album will hope to come up for air in 2009, but no release date has been confirmed quite yet. I’ve been waiting for some time to see these guys in Brighton, so you will definitely catch me there. See you at the front…

DROP THE LIME
Self-declaring himself as the ‘Heavy Bass Champion’, this New York fella brings walls crashing down with his live set. Describing Luca Venzia’ssound as House music doesn’t quite do him justice. It definitely has it’s roots in House music, with the choice of vocal samples and the beats typically whipped up and up. It has this new twist on it that’s a sound all it’s own. A kind of warped, wobbling bassline and a scratchy snare beat. This new evolution is called Fidget House and it has many pretenders involved such as Herve and Fake Blood, but it seems the crown belongs to Drop The Lime. It’s an incessant beat that verges on the chaotic, with it’s constant booming and disturbed break downs, but for those people that like their dance full on and brimming with energy, then this night will be for you. This tiny, very personal venue will be rammed and the atmosphere in your face. I can’t imagine a venue that suits the music any better. In a month where Charles Darwin celebrated his 200th birthday, check out the evolution in House music right here…

Q & A – THE HAIR

                                             Q & A   –  THE HAIR

OK, so we are going to try a slightly new take on my blog with this post. Let me know your thoughts as usual…

I’ve been busy grabbing new bands/acts/DJ’s and chucking a few questions their way to help enlighten their fans and because…well…I’m a nosey little bastard. Nice.

Nothing too deep, just an overview and an opinion, with a teeny bit of insight is all I ask from them. Hope it adds to your RECOMMENDER experience. More to come when I get a chance to post them.

First up is a band I’ve written about below in THE RECOMMENDER – NUMBER 2, so for more info and splendid tuneage on THE HAIR go hunt it out down below. They hail from Yorkshire and brim with excellent riff-tastic, casio-cool Indie pop. I love it!

Their songsmith and lively frontman, SAM ROBSON, was the fella I managed to grab for a spare minute and throw some Q’s his way. Find his A’s below. Enjoy…

1.) For those new to The Hair, what’s your history and how did you meet?

Neil and Lee are brothers who were my next door neighbours..and vijay stepping in to drum earlier this year. We’ve basically been hammering away at gigs for a while, mainly up north but with the odd daliance in a festival or tour support.

2.) How is the Yorkshire music scene these days – any hot tips?

It’s as fabulous as usual. Lots of cool bands around…I’d look out for a guy called Jonjo Feather and also a band called Dinosaur Pile-up. Both are frikkin sweet.

3.) Who are your main influences?

I wasn’t like every other kid, you know, who dreams about being an astronaut, I was always more interested in what bark was made out of on a tree. Richard Gere’s a real hero of mine. Sting. Sting would be another person who’s a hero. The music he’s created over the years, I don’t really listen to it, but the fact that he’s making it, I respect that. I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I’m selling? No. Do I know what I’m doing today? No. But I’m here, and I’m gonna give it my best shot.

I can’t do these questions really, it’s tough, but I love all the music I listen to like ryan adams, bright eyes, the faint, the rapture, justin timberlake (!) etc etc but I’m not sure what actually has direct influence on The Hair!

4.) What’s it like having two brothers in the band?

Brilliant, they’ve done all their arguing at an early age so they never consciously disagree…

5.) When is your debut album, ‘Indecisions’, due for a release?

In the UK? We’ll probo not release that particular album but a mix of that and some new tracks…hopefully in the next 9 months…

6.) What has happened with the recent change of drummer and how does this affect you?

It’s made us a better sounding live band…a more commanding bass drum. Plus the band internally has a much better relationship. Things had broken down completely with the last guy (though we wish him well for the future) and now we enjoy it again!

7.) Do you have a favourite song on your upcoming debut album? If so, why is that your fave?

Oh I couldn’t say that…hmm…I love ‘Ghosts’ – that’s good, and ‘Half Cut’ is really enjoyable to hear and play for me. We release it free from www.thehairfreedownload.co on the 14th july!

8.) What is the best way for your fans to access your music?

itunes is most direct, but I would say if you want to get hold of the album before it’s remixed/remastered and released with different songs on a date yet to be decided then there are ways and means…and google is your friend…either that or buy it on import!

9.) Have you any tours planned for 2008 (particularly around the launch of the album)?

we’ve just done 10 uk gigs, one video shoot, and 8 days of work in 14 days, so I’m not quite thinking about other touring just yet! but I reckon we’ll do some extensive touring from the autumn onwards if things work out for us.

10.) Can you give us one random fact that no single fan would yet know about you?

I share my birthday with cliff richard!

11.) What is next for The Hair?

Free download (see above!)!!!

So that’s this Q & A’s first installment. More will follow once I get around to it. I list below, as a little taster, their recently recorded new music video for ‘HALF CUT’. It makes me feel drunk just watching it. It’s yet another bloody brilliant song that gets stronger as it develops. There’s plenty more floating about out there from these guys too.

Find their Myspace page here: www.myspace.com/thehair

That’s it for this first Q & A. More to come when I get around to them.

Look out for The Recommender  –  Number 5 real soon…

THE RECOMMENDER – Number 2

Welcome back…

OK, numero 2. Gonna have a bit a of Yorkshire-theme with this one. Got three bands I wanna share with you… One is a band I’ve been harking on about on other spaces/sites etc, but still think they need to be heard to be believed. They fookin’ rock!

The other Yorkshire band I list are new to me and I’ve fallen in love. And in true Nat King Cole style, this time it’s will be forever. You will learn to love them too. They WILL be the sound of your summer if you still have your ears attached. Perfect beer-on-beach material.

Lastly, I wanna shout about an awesome electro act from LA. I told you that town was cooler than cool right now. They’ve been listed a billion times on countless other blogs before mine, but I’m a new blog and I ain’t up for being first, just good, so I felt them worthy of a new mention. Nice.

GRINNY GRANDAD
Oh what a sound!! Sweet, soulful, silky vocals over a brilliant set.  A Yorkshire 5-piece straight outta the Mr Scruff / Kidda record box. Horizontal, laid back summer stuff. Riffs and samples marry perfectly with Kimberley Kennedy’s and Claire Swain’s talented vocals. Get ready to fall…

THE HAIR
OK, so I’ve known about these fella’s for ages and so has the Blogosphere, but this is a new blog space and I just cannot avoid listing them – they’re too darn good! A Yorkshire 4-piece with awesome skills. Sadly just lost their drummer in true ‘Spinal Tap’ style, (but not to a tragic gardening accident, he moved to Swindon or something). Anyways, they’ll move onwards and upwards. Sam Robson on lead-everything is one powerful songsmith. Think The Rapture shagging The Sunshine underground with the freshest moves, add in a dollop of Casio keys and you won’t be far off. It’s all brilliant hooks, riffs and danceable indie brilliance. I attach their video for the track Disco/Retro as it’s ace. Sam told me he’s gonna give some thought to which mp3 I can attach as they’re currently arranging their debut, ‘Indecisions’, of which I’ve had a sneak preview and I assure you its hit after hit. I’ll add the mp3 on a later blog…

DISCO/RETRO

GUNS n BOMBS
– Electro brilliance. Simple. Great remixers. I attach one below they’ve done of Chromeo’s ‘Fancy footwork’ for your pleasure. A Los Angeles 2-piece marking the scene over on the West coast with distinction. Again, I know they’ve been around the blogoshpere for some time, but I love them too much to miss out. Listen, enjoy, check out their Myspace and keep one eye on the wonders that they bring. Awesome stuff.

As before, I will also be adding a couple of smaller highlights and mentioning others worthy of note…

Please go search out ‘Damn Arms’ at www.myspace.com/damnarms . They are from the same school of greatness as Midnight Juggernauts in Melbourne. Its all good space age synth rock

For loads more of our favourite super-cool electro punk pleeeeeeeeeease go find ‘Burn The Negative’ at     www.myspace.com/burnthenegative . A fantastic 4-piece from Carlisle of all places. Well worth a punt. Go see, go see…

Hope you enjoyed. Leave a comment, subscribe or simply keep checking back for more updates. Until the next one…
