THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 46

We are pleased to inform you that we’ve relocated our monthly parties to a new home in Brighton; the larger capacity and better established venue, Audio, with its fantastic view of Brighton’s pier and beach.  We launch here on Saturday 31st July and we’ve pulled out all the stops to book a selection of truly awesome bands and DJs to kick things off in style.

In a change to the original format we’ve now split the evening in two.  Firstly, we have our Recommender Live section, which showcases two or three cutting edge bands from around the world.  From 11pm we step in to the Recommender Late, which is more of club night, bringing an awesome headline DJ to town, alongside our resident Recommender DJs – consisting of Matt Allfrey, from Battery Powered DJs and Jonny Cassell, from the established Blah Blah Blah DJ crew.

Of course our familiar and totally brilliant photobooth will return, (see previous results of that here), and we will be giving away a free mixtape CD to the first 50 people through the door. The mixtape from our last show can be heard and downloaded below. It’s a little bit good…

YOUNG EMPIRES – First featured on The Recommender here, we are pleased to be bringing this Canadian three piece to Brighton for the first time ever.  They arrive with a tidal wave of hype and hungry A&R men, alongside their original, percussive, indie pop magic.  The new Friendly Fires anyone?

SUNDAY GIRL – SELF CONTROL (YOUNG EMPIRES REMIX)

DAVID E. SUGAR – This will be a live set with a band behind this pioneering DJ.  Famous for doing extraordinary things with a Speak & Spell, you may well have come across this underground sensation on Kitsune compilations.  Most recently he’s signed to Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label, which will surely push this artist well and truly overground.

THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND – There’s honestly no superlatives or twisted adjectives that could describe just how good this eight piece New York band are.  They have absolutely every ingredient to make our party go off.  Impossibly entertaining disco, funk, pop and groove are all thumped out by the sexiest band alive today.  Prepare to be hypnotized!

RECOMMENDER DJs – We bring to Audio our regular partner in beats, the Brighton hipster Matt Allfrey, from Battery Powered DJs, but standing alongside will now be the head of the Blah Blah Blah DJ crew, Jonny Cassell.  If you’ve been to any killer parties in the city of Brighton in recent years the chances are one of these two were involved.

RORY PHILLIPS – Topping our club night is this extraordinary DJ.  He’s the protegé to none other than the DJ overlord, Erol Alkan, having had a residency at London’s Trash night and its modern version, Durr.   With a truckload of seemingly perfect remixes under his belt, expect a set of the unexpected – of course played using his signature phone set instead of a pair of headphones.  As Brighton’s going out bible, The Source Magazine, put it: “Rory Phillips should be fanfared into town like a god“.  Well, we are that very fanfare.

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 36

The (r)evolution continues with our second party event of 2010.  Last month was a massive success, with the predicted set of Brighton hipsters turning out.  Highlights included some fantastic laughs with Eleni Mettyear’s Photobooth, the results of which you can see here, but the stars were undoubtedly Plugs, as they blasted out an outstanding headline set.

So we arrive at the next event, with Eleni Mettyear returning with her booth and the Ophelia Fancy girls will once again be handing out our gifts, which include our exclusive new mixtape (# 3), featuring a collection of the music getting critiqued on this blog.  In case you missed it, the mixtape from our last party is attached below.  Lastly, we plan on having two outstanding bands that we promise will knock your sexy socks off.

THE RECOMMENDER MIXTAPE # 2

:KINEMA: – Hitting the stage first will be :Kinema:, a trio of ascending stars from the Brighton music scene, with their magnificent synth pop.  Expect Dom’s sexy showmanship, with barrels of positive confidence and tunes to match.  This will no doubt be one of the last times you will be able to catch this band in such an intimate environment, so rapid is their climb.

VELO – Headliners tonight will be a proper buzz band from the London hipster circles.  To give you some context, Velo arrive with a group that counts one member from Marina & The Diamonds, one member from I Blame Coco and one member from Golden Silvers.  This is a band with real potential, gaining lots of chatter on the blogs and they even hit the number one spot on Hype Machine within the last couple of weeks.  2010 is theirs for the taking.

BATTERY POWERED DJs – Our resident DJs will round off the evening, playing tracks exclusively from the blog, so expect cutting edge, razor sharp selections.  If you want to know what tunes you should be listening to this year then check out this set from Brighton’s scenester DJs.

Tickets are available from Ape, Resident and Rounder Records.  If you can’t get to the shops in person, simply phone them up and ask them to put a ticket on the door for you and they’ve agreed to help.  It’s only £3.50 advance and £4 on the door, as we seriously don’t want anyone missing out on the action.  Welcome back to the future…

THE GIG LIST – NUMBER 35

For those long term Recommender followers, you will have seen how this blog has improved and grown, step by step, into the beautiful monster it is today.  Well, to all of you, here’s our biggest leap of evolution yet!

The Recommender will now be throwing monthly blog parties at a venue in the centre of the city in which this blog was born, Brighton, UK.  As one of England’s youngest and most forward thinking cities, it seems the perfect home.  We will be showcasing the excellent music that we’ve been critiquing on the blog over recent years, so expect cutting edge cool, each and every month.

RECOMMENDER MIXTAPE # 1

Alongside the two live performances from our hand-picked bands, we will have a few additional, unique, regular features.  As Seth Godin once proclaimed, “be remarkable”, “be that purple cow”, so we are taking a fresh approach, throwing proper parties, with ingredients that people have never experienced before…

How will we do this?  Well, these extra features include one of our cities rising stars in the world of fashion photography, Eleni Mettyear, who will be setting up her monthly ‘Photoboosh‘.  An area all her own where she will be capturing portraits of all you beautiful people, so bring your best face.  All subsequent shots will appear for your review on it’s own section on The Recommender.

Additionally, we’ve recruited Brighton’s talented designers of couture lingerie, the Ophelia Fancy girls.  They will be joining us, dressed, (or should that be undressed), in their unbelievably gorgeous outfits handing out goodies to all who attend.

The items being given out at the end of each and every party will include The Recommender’s Gift Bags.  Among lots of other exciting bits, these will always include Recommender badges, stickers and the soon to be legendary Recommender Mixtapes, (see above), which will be a mix of the music we have blogged.  Each one will be unique to that night’s party.

As for our launch event, we will have Woo!worths hitting the stage first, an amazing local band, who blast out hook-filled electro pop.  It will be the ideal party-starter and we couldn’t be more pleased to be a part of their rapid ascendancy.

Headlining the night will be Plugs, one of the most upbeat and enjoyable indie dance acts of recent years.  This is the new project from Morgan Quaintance, formerly with Does It Offend You, Yeah?.  If anyone knows how to whip the crowd into a creamy froth then it’s this masterful group of performers.

Every night we will also have the magical Battery Powered DJs, a pair of proper Brighton scenesters.  There’s a reason they appear at every cool event in town, because they know how to own the dancefloor.  They’ve agreed to play selections that are purely from The Recommender’s awesome archives.

Tickets are available from Ape, Resident and Rounder Records.  If you can’t get to the shops in person, simply phone them and ask them to put a ticket on the door for you and they’ve agreed to help.  It’s only £3 advance and £4 on the door, as we seriously don’t want anyone missing out on the action.

This is the future of partying.  Welcome to the purple cow evolution…
